Quick Guide To The Types Of Industrial Warehouse Racking

Pallet Racking

Located in Brisbane Macrack is one of Australia’s leading pallet racking manufacturers, providing high-quality, Australian-made warehouse storage and shelving servicing Logan and shipping Australia wide. Pallet racking refers to any storage system that is designed to store palletised stock. Pallet racking systems are designed to maximise storage capacity and streamline the picking process through efficient product storage.

There are many different types of pallet racking systems designed with varying levels of product accessibility and storage capacity. Choosing the right pallet racking system for your needs will depend on your product range, storage space, and picking processes. There are also several different specialised factory racking systems ranging from carpet and cable racking to cantilever and sheet racking.

Macrack provides quality, Australian-made warehouse racking and ships to the Sunshine Coast and Australia wide, backed by a lifetime guarantee. If you’re looking for a reliable warehouse storage solution to increase the storage capacity and organisation of your warehouse, look no further than Macrack. Selective Pallet Racking

Selective Pallet Racking Example

Selective pallet racking is a high accessibility racking system, where all pallets stored can be accessed from the aisle as they are stored one-pallet deep, unlike high-density racks where pallets are stored behind one another. This makes selective pallet racking ideal for warehouses with a wide range of varying products.

As selective racking is a FIFO (first in, first out) system, it can also be effective for the storage of perishable items. Selective pallet racks can be installed back to back in order to create aisles and is compatible with a standard forklift.

Double Deep Pallet Racking

double deep racking example

Double deep pallet racking is a great alternative to selective racking if you’re looking to store more pallets in the same space. This is because, in a double-deep rack, pallets are stored two-deep, with racks spanning the depth of four pallets between aisles in a back-to-back configuration. This essentially halves the amount of aisle space needed, increasing the amount of floor space that can be used for pallet storage.

With pallets stored two-pallet deep, double deep racking is the perfect combination of high density and high accessibility storage, with 50% of pallets accessible from the aisle. As double deep racking is twice as deep as a selective racking system, you will need a forklift with longer tynes or a special attachment to safely load and unload pallets from the rack.

Push Back Pallet Racking

Push Back Racking Example

The high-density storage of push back pallet racking is ideal for bulk amounts of the same products. Customisable in both height and depth, Macrack’s push back racking can be built to be anywhere from two to six pallets deep.

In this racking system, pallets are loaded onto a moving cart system and are essentially ‘pushed back’ towards the back of the rack as each new pallet is loaded in. Then, each time a pallet is unloaded from the rack, the remaining pallets are safely sent towards the front of the system. This means that, unlike some high-density racking systems, push back racking is compatible with a standard forklift as each pallet is pushed forward to be unloaded from the front of the rack.

Drive-In Pallet Racking

RSA 3

Drive in pallet racking can be used to maximise the storage capacity of any space. This is because, in a drive-in racking system, forklifts can drive into the system to retrieve pallets from any location within the racking, eliminating the need for aisles.

Drive-in racking is ideal for the storage of bulk amounts of the same product and is often used in cold rooms and freezers, making the most of every inch of floor space.

Pallet Flow Racking

Pallet Flow Racking Example

Pallet flow racking is a FIFO (first in, first out) pallet racking system that combines high-density storage with automatic product rotation. Pallets are loaded into the back of the system onto rolling tracks which allow pallets to ‘flow’ towards the front of the rack. This facilitates automatic product rotation as, when a pallet is removed from the front of the racking, the remaining pallets in that row will automatically move forward, ensuring that the first pallet loaded into the racking system is the first to be unloaded.

Pallet flow racking is a great option for the bulk storage of perishable goods and products with a limited shelf life and is compatible for use with a standard forklift.

Cantilever Racking

Cantilever racking uses the same high-quality uprights of a standard pallet racking system with the addition of cantilevered steel arms, ideal for the horizontal storage of long products such as timber, steel lengths, and pipes.

Macrack cantilever racks can be designed to suit your requirements with steel arms that can be customised to be any length and the option to add more uprights into the frame for a higher weight load capacity or to have the uprights positioned further apart for longer items. Cantilever racking can be installed back-to-back to create aisles or as a single row of racking. It is compatible for use with a standard forklift and can also accommodate handpicking for products stored on lower shelves.

Sheet Racking

Sheet Racking Example

As the name suggests, sheet racking is designed for storing sheet materials such as gyprock, sheet metal, and fencing. Macrack sheet racking can be designed to fit the needs of your inventory with customisable shelf length, width, and weight load capacity.

Sheet racking can be used to increase storage capacity and improve picking processes as sheet products are stored horizontally, minimising the amount of space needed between shelves and making all stored products easily visible and accessible from the aisle.

Industrial Shelving

Industrial Shelving Example

Industrial shelving is a great way to introduce functional shelving for increased organisation and storage capacity in any warehouse. Macrack industrial shelving can be customised to store almost anything, available in varying weight capacities and shelf sizes. Our industrial shelving can be made with a range of different shelf materials, including particle board, MDF board, and steel mesh decks depending on your requirements.

Longspan Shelving

Longspan Shelving Example

Longspan shelving is the ideal storage solution for smaller, handpicked items. With shared frames, longspan shelving is a cost-effective warehouse shelving system that can be added to as your storage needs grow.

Our longspan shelving is made with quality steel for durability and can be built to hold up to 400kg per shelf (UDL) with multiple shelves per bay.

Tyre Racking

Tyre racking can be used to store bulk amounts of tyres, from bicycle tyres to heavy vehicle tyres. In a tyre racking system, tyres are stored vertically with a beam on either side to prevent them from rolling. This design allows for easy handpicking as tyres can be rolled out of the rack with minimal effort.

Narrow Aisle Racking

Narrow aisle racking is built with large shelves and narrow aisles between each row of racking. Designed for use with a stockpicker, narrow aisle racking has no need for the large aisles of a forklift-loaded racking system, maximising the amount of floor space that can be used for product storage.

Narrow aisle racking is typically used to store large goods that are manually handled, like furniture. The large shelves of a narrow aisle rack allow personnel to walk into the shelves from the stock picker platform in order to retrieve stored items.

Coil / Drum Racking

Drum racking is designed for the storage of industrial drums and steel coils. Each drum or coil is stored in a steel cradle set on a pair of sturdy beams to prevent products from moving while stored. A drum racker attachment is required for forklifts to load drums in and out of the racking system safely.

Cable Racking

In a cable racking system, cable drums or spindles are stored on a horizontal steel rod on brackets that connect to the racking frame. This storage system allows for simple handpicking where the cable can be easily pulled for retrieval. Cable drums are loaded into the racking system using a standard forklift with a specialised cable reel attachment.

Carpet Racking

Carpet Racking Example

Carpet racking is essentially an oversized pigeon hole storage system that can be used to store a wide range of carpets and other cylindrical items such as fabric, vinyl, bubble wrap, and even garage doors.

Carpet racking can be designed for handpicking, with goods stored vertically on the lower level and horizontally on higher shelves that will be accessed with a forklift. Alternatively, our carpet racking can be built for horizontal product storage throughout the entire system.

A-Frame Racking

A Frame Racking Toowoomba

A-frame racking is used to store long, rigid products, such as steel extrusions, pipes, and timber. With an A-frame storage system, products are stored vertically on their end, minimising their footprint in order to increase storage capacity. The frame of the racking is sloped to support stored products, resembling the letter ‘A’ when looking at back-to-back racks from the aisle end.

A-frame racking is ideal for handpicking warehouses as products can be easily identified and accessed from the aisle.

Raised Storage Areas

RSA 2

(Also Referred To As Multi-tier Racking or Warehouse Mezzanine Floors)

Raised storage areas, or warehouse mezzanine floors, create one or more additional racking-supported platforms to increase floor space and storage capacity in a warehouse. In fact, a multi-tier mezzanine floor can more than double the available floor space in a warehouse by making use of available vertical space.
